Had a real cool time interviewing Andrew Hewson, owner of Hewson Consultants Ltd. I think this man needs no introduction, having published everything from Uridium, Exolon, Cybernoid, Avalon, Nebulus, Zynaps, Firelord….. need I go on?

Andrew was a great sport, witty, funny, regaling us with stories of his early books on machine code, through to unique anecdotes about everything from the tax man to working with Raf Cecco, Steve Turner and Dominic Robinson, amongst many others!

His son, Rob, is also heavily into the retro scene – please check out the following for his latest project:

Thank you Mr Hewson! It was a pleasure sir.

Had a great time meeting and interviewing Jim Bagley, of Cabal and Midnight Resistance fame. The first meeting was at Play Expo in Blackpool, where Jim – bless him – was exhausted from his motorbike and Play Expo adventures (he was Guest of Honour). We still had a great chat about some of the things to be covered in the interview.

We then met up in Jim’s hometown of Liverpool, for a fun interview (the longest we’ve ever done!) which was fascinating in itself with regards his Spectrum developments, his time at Special FX and working with Joffa, and Jim also gave an in-depth explanation concerning the creation of Dragon’s Lair on the ZX81 (for which he received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records!) – so for fans of that, we’ll be releasing it as a separate “mini-film” for those with a serious technical disposition. Thanks Jim. Onwards!! 🙂

Had an incredibly fun time interviewing Ant Harper [retrogamescollector.com] and Mark Howlett [AKA Lord Arse, @lord_arse] at the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge [computinghistory.org]; Ant and Mark are two massively enthusiastic retro game fans and, indeed, Spectrum addicts. Ant has a great retro games website, whereas Lord Arse has a truly stunning 96,000 followers on Twitter. We talked favourite games, piracy, early memories and the future of the ZX Spectrum. Fabulous! Thanks guys!!Ant&Mark (4)

At PLAY Expo in Blackpool I had the massively entertaining experience of interviewing Simon Butler, who worked for Imagine Software and Ocean Software (amongst many others, his CV is extraordinary!) where we discussed the beginnings of the industry, Simon’s work as an artist over the past 25 or so years, his thoughts on piracy and software/hardware developments, and the future of the industry. Simon was a gent, and the interview a great addition to the film. Thank you Mr Butler!

Had the totally amazing opportunity to interview one of my all-time Spectrum heroes, the one and only RICK DICKINSON down in Cambridge. Rick, who designed the ZX81, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, Spectrum+ etc etc etc was an absolute blast. A proper gent, full of brilliant anecdotes, wit and charisma, and a truly genius vision on design, and indeed the design of the ZX81, Spectrum, Sinclair QL etc. It was an awesome experience, and for a lifelong Speccy fan, an absolute dream. 🙂 Thanks to Rick for inviting me into his home, and to his charming wife who was also a star. I cannot WAIT to put this film together…!!

Thanks to PLAY EXPO in Blackpool for an awesome event, and allowing us an AAA filming experience!!

Spectrum Addict enjoyed itself immensely, meeting new friends and old, and stocking up some great shots for the movie. Blackpool was sunny, the fish & chips were good, and it was a pleasure to meet people like Simon Butler, Andy Spencer, Jim Bagley and Bob Wakelin – amongst many others!!

JASON FITZPATRICK

Centre for Computing History in Cambridge

Spectrum Addict visited the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge where we were happily looked after by the affable and charming Jason Fitzpatrick. Jason also agreed to be interviewed for the film about his early Spectrum experiences, and about the museum in general. A great comedian, Jason was a fun and entertaining interviewee, and is a great addition to the Spectrum Addict line-up!! Then we spent a while filming in the museum itself, which I can’t recommend enough – get your ass down to Cambridge and check out some computing history… your kids (including adult kids) will love it!
